MR2 Grupo B - Simplesmente Bombástico

The Celica twin-cam turbo was Toyota's choice to enter the World Rally Championship when they decided to take a run at the title. The Celica's major handicap was its lack of four-wheel-drive, however, the car was well-built and fairly straightforward to maintain. The engine produced about 290 horsepower (which later grew to 370 as the evolution versions were released), and it had a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
Toyota's first rally in the Group B class was the 1983 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland, with the young but talented Juha Kankkunen behind the wheel. The Celica grabbed a fine sixth place in its first rally. Its second rally was even better. Toyota and desert rally expert Bjorn Waldegard teamed up to win the Ivory Coast rally in October, 1983, on the Celica's second outing. However, the 1983 RAC rally was an eye-opener for Toyota. The Celica simply didn't have the pace to keep up with the other teams on tight European stages.
The Celica was out of its depth on the twisty European roads, but it found its niche on the African continent. The Celica won no less than six rallies in Africa, including three consecutive Safari rallies in Kenya from 1984 to 1986. Toyota added three wins in Western Africa's Ivory Coast rally, making it the undisputed king of the desert during the Group B era. The Celica's ruggedness and simplicity (compared to other Group B cars) made it reliable and perfectly suited to the harsh desert conditions. The Celica changed drastically following Group B's cancellation for the 1987 season.
When Toyota realised that the Celica 4T-GTE wasn't very competitive outside of Africa, the team started work on a new contender - a 600 horsepower MR2. With the cancellation of Group B, the car was never entered in rally competition.
recently received some more images from a MR2 Message Board User of the Famous Group S Toyota MR2. Web sites around the web state horsepower numbers of between 600 and 700. My goal is to collect all of the information that can be collected on the most powerful MR2 that Toyota ever made.

Toyota Team Europe (TTE) also felt this way about the MR2's potential as a rally winner and as a result created the most fearsome MKI MR2 ever created. At the time of the MR2s introduction, Group B rallying was a huge success in international rallying with many manufactures churning out 600+ HP AWD rally monsters in an all out bid for the FIA championship. In addition to these cars, a new proposed Group S category was created that was to be inaugurated in 1988. It was for this class that the Group S MR2 rally car was built. A ground up development was started and with 600+Hp and AWD the car resembled the MR2 in appearance only. Nevertheless it was still a great sight to behold, and something to be proud of as an MR2 owner.
There were 2 produced, one with the engine mounted transversely, and one with the engine mounted longitudinally. One was designed for tarmac rallies, while the other was suited to gravel rallies. The motors were both turbocharged, and have a displacement of 2.2L. While not known for sure, I am guessing that this could have been the either 4T-GT as used in the celica rally car preceding it, or it possibly could have been the famous 503E used in the GTP cars. Unfortunately this car was never to prove its worth as both the Group B and Group S categories were scrapped due to safety concerns that arose after seeing speeds and fatalities increase to an unprecedented level. Sigh... What could have been.

Yes, you're right. Toyota had restored the 700HP MR2. They had used this car as a toy for VIP's in the last Deutschland Rallye (crap). Now it park in Toyota's cellar again, until they have a new crazy idea to use it. Mr. Boetcher, the chief of Toyota Team europe told me during a telephone call some months ago that it is possible to buy this car, but he had no idea what it will cost.
I have some pics enclosed. We had borrow it for one of our meeting. Until today I have found no information sin the web.

One of these was RWD while the other was AWD using a custom gearbox manufactured by Xtrac. Both were not true Group S cars however, as the Group S rules limited engine capacity to 1.2L. Instead they were a sort of hybrid Group B / Group S cars. One was designed for tarmac rallies, while the other was suited to gravel rallies. Only one of these cars has survived to the present day, as two of them were destroyed in testing.

Faz-me lembrar bastante o FORD RS200 Rally Car, agora não tenho a certeza se o Ford é pré ou pós MR2 mas fico na dúvida se a Ford não foi buscar inspiração aos nossos amigos japo's.

É pós RS200, o RS ainda fez vários rally´s.. este veio tarde e a más horas.. daí nunca ter corrido..

o ford rs200 nasceu primeiro que o mr2. o mr2 era um projecto para o grupo s que viria substituir o grupo b, mas com as tragedias consecutivas no grupo b, até o grupo s foi banido em 1986. O grupo A viria substituir estes dois grupos em 1987.
