    POis é verdade, a nossa TOYOTA também anda a pagar multas:

    Toyota to Settle Clean Air Violations

    WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to fix up to 3,000 school and municipal bus engines to make them pollute less under a $34 million settlement reached with the U.S. government over Clean Air Act violations.

    Toyota will spend about $20 million to retrofit diesel engines on the older buses and pay a $500,000 civil penalty under the agreement announced Friday with the Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency. Combined with improved fuel, the changes will cut down on cancer-causing diesel particles on these buses.

    "With this bus retrofit action, our nation's school children will be breathing less of the small particles that can cause lung and respiratory damage," said EPA Administrator Christine Whitman.

    The settlement also requires that Toyota accelerate its compliance with a new emissions regulation affecting about 1.4 million new vehicles manufactured between 2004 and 2006, at a cost of about $11 million.

    In addition, the company will spend about $3 million to extend its emission control warranty on an estimated 2.2 million vehicles sold between 1996 and 1998 that were the subject of the Clean Air Act violations. The warranty will be extended from the current two years or 24,000 miles to 14 years or 150,000 miles.

    Owners of those vehicles will be notified within the next 12 months. Affected vehicles include Camry, Avalon, Corolla, Tercel, Paseo, Lexus, Sienna, 4Runner, RAV4, Tacoma and T100 models.

    The Clean Air Act violations involved a Toyota diagnostic system that the government claimed in a lawsuit did not properly notify drivers about leaks in vehicle emission control systems. The lawsuit contended that Toyota did not disclose the limitations in the system to the government.

    "This settlement is a reminder to all drivers that their vehicle's engine light plays an important part in keeping vehicles running clean and protecting the environment," Whitman said.

    Toyota spokeswoman Martha Voss said the settlement made clear that the vehicles themselves did not violate emissions standards.

    "There were never any emissions problems with the vehicles. It was just the warning light," she said.

    Toyota agreed to retrofit the buses because it wanted the settlement to involve a pro-environment project unrelated to any of its products. Toyota does not manufacture or sell diesel buses or engines in the United States, Voss said.
    Tudo isto porque ficou decidido que a Toyota Americana teria de:
    1- melhorar os veiculos autocarros escolares a diesel;
    2- trata dos veiculos entre 1996 e 1998 que andam a violar o pacto de não poluição
    3- determinadas luzes de motor, informam o dono do veiculo que precisa de levar o seu veiculo às oficinas da marca, mas segundo parece há certos condutore que não ligaram para isso.

    Muito me admira ver este tipo de reacções nos ESTADOS UNIDOS DA AMERICA, sobretudo quando na EUROPA a Toyota é uma das mais evoluidas a nivel de Leis anti-poluição.
    Segundo parece, as LEIS da Europa são muito mais restritivas que as dos Estados Unidos da America.
