Successful functionality test for Toyota Racing.

TOYOTA Racing conducted a trouble-free functionality test of its new TS030 HYBRID chassis at Magny-Cours in France. With Alex Wurz and Nicolas Lapierre at the wheel, the new chassis which features planned updates to the aerodynamics and hybrid system intended for the car's first race.

Between them, they completed 81 laps during the one-day functionality test yesterday, which allows the team to resume its testing programme with confidence in the coming days ahead of its first race, the Le Mans 24 Hours in which two TS030 HYBRIDs will compete

Pascal Vasselon (Toyota): "No margin for error.

Wednesday, on top of the steep slope there was a photo shoot a bit special. The Toyota TS030 HYBRID there posing for the objectives, dressed in a gown new, more sophisticated, more in tune with the times than the one presented in January and thus will not run forever. Thursday, it was the turn of the Areopagus Toyota to be present in the Belgian Ardennes, including Pascal Vasselon, technical director of TMG. Thanks to him, are better acquainted with the TS010 and TS020 downward aka GT-One ...

Pascal, can you clarify a bit what happened during the accident at Paul Ricard?

"It was pouring rain but we decided to drive anyway because the experience was interesting. And we had a little problem in sealing an electronic box. During a braking phase, it has disrupted the electronic management of it. Because with a hybrid car, there are two distinct phases of braking. It slows or those recovering energy to recharge the system of accumulation, in this case, our super-capacitors. Then the system or being charged, the electronic switches to 100% conventional braking. And this transition is controlled by electronics. With the moisture that has infiltrated the system entered in "default" is only a brake on the front wheels and Nicolas suddenly had more than enough stopping power to be part of the curve. It was slow but not enough. It is in no way guilty. He typed at about 100 km / h. 70% of the car was intact but all suspension broke through the monocoque at the front left ... "

It was quite surprising to learn that while you did not have a single hull ...

"It was a surprise for you, not for us! (Laughter) Do not forget that originally, in 2012 our program was fairly light because it was just a learning year. A year of learning with a low budget so we knew from the outset that during a certain period of time, we do disposerions only one monohull. Then, after the withdrawal of Peugeot, we got power but we need time to make the parts. For unlike our opponents who buy much of their elements among subcontractors, we make ourselves 80% of our parts. And this increases to 85% in the field of composites. The shell is made with us and we can not make one at a time .. It takes 10 weeks. We could not employ 15 people to suddenly pick up the pace. If you buy your shells in a subcontractor, you can go faster if you put the price. But we could not do that. "

You do not have the opportunity to change parts of the hull?

"No, we had absolutely no time for that. We absolutely had to rush to finish the new shell so it will be exactly the same. "

The second car will she finished in time for the test day?

"To date, it's a bit early to tell. For the race, we are now confident about the presence of the second car. But for the test day, we can not yet say. It sounds difficult, however ... "

You will not have any hull therefore reserved for the 24 Hours?

"No. If we suffer another accident, there will be only one car in the race ... "

Do you feel ready for Le Mans despite cons-time?

"Our goal is to compete anyway. We did not aim to win the Le Mans this year. But we have the fastest hybrid car. As for finishing the race, that's another story. But we have two endurance tests to be performed which will bring to four the number of simulations of 24 hours we have made by Le Mans. The first will take place next week in Aragon, the next at Paul Ricard at the end of May. A simulation is a good training because unlike the practice sessions, we actually put the team under pressure as in the race and any repairs must be performed at the same pace in the race. Second, we train our staff regularly to respect the pit stops. So we will be as prepared as possible. After the tests can not prepare for everything and this is why we absolutely wanted to participate in at least one race before Le Mans. Unfortunately, we are deprived. "

You prefer to speed so the reliability?

"We do not neglect the reliability, of course. But indeed, we would first like to compete, quick. "

Can you tell us about the new aerodynamic package that you have brought here Wednesday for a photo shoot in the steep path?

"The one with which we began our tests was a generic package, I would say. It allowed us to discover what a LMP1 test the mechanical, our hybrid system, etc. ... Now we really have a real package for the race. The main change comes from the splitter to which we are far from the usual standards in prototype to get closer to what is done in F1 because it acts as a spoiler. Then, these are details that allowed us to reduce drag while increasing support. The car is just as often and more developed, more developed a car seems a little more aggressive. And yet, one that came here Wednesday did not yet have all the latest details ... "

The study of this new package has not started after the first track testing of the TS030 HYBRID?

"No, you know, the aerodynamic development takes time. Therefore, the study had begun several months ago. "

Before you have any experience on the track?

"Yes we were. But you, in terms of aero development, it is not so difficult to achieve set targets that will not change after track tests: Drag, support, consistency of support in such curves. The tests will allow us to slightly modify the aero balance but not the overall concept, nor the great data that allow us to conduct the study. "

On electric propulsion, have you made your choice for its location: the front wheels or rear wheels?

"We decided to propel the rear of the car. Engines, cooled by a liquid, are placed on the gearbox. This solution is less onerous in terms of weight and that of the airport. Because with an electric motor powering the front wheels, the drive shaft is necessarily interfere with the flow aero. Furthermore, I disagree with the argument that the four-wheel drive are more effective in the wet, especially with this Regulation intended by Peugeot, which states that the electric power can not be sent to the front wheels below 120 km / h. It almost completely annihilates the only advantage of four wheel drive would be the quality of propulsion. For over 120 km / h, the rear wheels are hardly more "saturated" and can send maximum power ... "

When did you make that decision?

"In early February. We took it very early because we wanted to do as soon as possible, the development of self with the final version of the hybrid system. "

So you actually tried the system at the front?

"Yes, absolutely. Moreover, if we make mods on the hull for 2013, priority will be to remove the anchors of electric motors in the front ... "

The body first version was therefore compatible with the presence of a driveshaft in the front?

"Absolutely, it was the same body. "

Audi has chosen a system of energy recovery wheel inertia. You preferred the supercapacitors. Why?

"For us, ultracapacitors offer the highest power density and this is most important. The regulation sets a limit to the amount of energy recovered during braking: 500 kJ. We know how long braking. We derive the necessary power. And for this power level, we want the lowest weight possible. Supercapacitors are the answer to this problem with more, including a guarantee of reliability we are satisfied. For unlike Audi, we know this system a long time. We used already in our hybrid Supra. But things change quickly in this world of the hybrid and the truth of a day is not that of the next day. Today, batteries are heavy and do not restore energy quickly. By cons, they can store much more than supercapacitors. To recover all the energy of braking durations as short, it requires too many batteries and weight is affected. But within two-three years, a new generation of batteries currently under development, will probably take precedence over the capacitors. "

Always comparing to Audi, they use two electric motors (100 hp each) by emptying fast enough so the energy reserve. Have you made a similar choice or not?

"We do not share power figures of our electrical system. But you know, sizing what its power, it is not accelerating but braking. Because the acceleration, release energy that is available in two seconds or four does not make a big difference. While it is always best to let go of the horses as soon as possible because we reached a speed faster than that one takes on the entire straight. But it remains a second-order advantage. By cons, what is recovered, it is a braking energy and it lasts two seconds. There are thus two seconds to check everything is possible. It is thus the braking power which sizes. An example: a driver knows he will have traffic at the end of a curve. It will therefore prefer a less braking late but longer during which he will be able to store more power and therefore better out of the curve and clear traffic in front of him. This system will change our approach traffic. "

At Le Mans, would you be able to accumulate 500 joules allowed on each brake?

"On heavy braking, yes, we're not very far. But on small braking, no, not yet. Le Mans, however, lends itself well to this exercise because it has heavy braking. "

Today, the regulations limit you? You could get even more on hard braking?

"Yes, we could, we eventually leak a recoverable energy. But the regulation 2014 should allow us to store twice as much. "

In case of failure of the electrical system, the car will she forced to retire?

"It depends on the type of failure. We have a list of possible failures, some will quit the car permanently, others will continue the race. What is certain is that in case of irretrievable breakdown of the energy recovery system, the first thing we must do is open the vents for the rear brakes when they are closed when the system works. Because it absorbs much of the braking energy so we close to allow the temperature to rise still in its optimum operating point. In case of failure, it will open ... "

What are your goals working at the Le Mans Test Day?

"Firstly, it depends on the actual presence or not of the second car. We must qualify our two drivers who have never driven at Le Mans. Then we define our set-up airport. I am less worried about the mechanical set-up in general, can be defined quite fine on our bench simulation. Then we need to work on the tires. Because Le Mans is very specific. You work at Paul Ricard, in Aragon, etc. ... Then you arrive at Le Mans and you forget everything you learned ... "
